The audiovisual archives include films about the history of Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital; television reports on the subject of psychiatric care in Italy; audiovisual media about mental problems produced by social and health services and associations.
In addition, the archives contain a collection of oral sources (video testimonials) on the history of the former Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital. The testimonial collection project, which began in 2005, is still in progress.
This project has resulted in the production of 62 videos of interviews from diverse sources (people with a mental illness, their family and carers, mental health workers, citizens and policy makers), with particular attention to the history of improvements to the psychiatric hospital.
The paper reference cards for consulting the testimonials, which are indexed and in chronological order, make it possible to research archive entries according to a specific theme and during a specific phase in the history of Santa Maria della Pietà. The archives are working to make available online reference materials regarding audiovisual media and video testimonials. And it is setting up research tools for researchers in collaboration with the General Archives Office of the Ministry of Cultural Property and Activities. It will soon be possible to access the database and even view some of the films directly from this Website. At present, researchers may consult the archives’audiovisual resources when the Center for Study and Research is open.
