Center for Study and Research LHA Roma E

6

The Center for Study and Research Museo Laboratorio della Mente is a Unit under the direction of the  Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale Roma E (Local Health Authority Roma E/LHA RME), established by Decision No. 751 on August 6, 2008, to protect and improve the historical and scientific legacy of the former Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital in Rome.

The LHA RME, with respect to its own historical and cultural roots, and in light of the social and cultural significance of the legacy of the former Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital is determined at this time to find the best way to protect and improve its scientific, artistic and cultural legacy and find ways to work with other government agencies, particularly the Ministry of Cultural Property and Activities, the Lazio Region and the city of Rome.
The Center for Study and Research Museo Laboratorio della Mente is the result of this commitment, which the LHA RME has also demonstrated in its plan for the use of the former Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital. This plan was approved on November 16, 2007, by the Lazio Regional Council, when it accepted the memorandum of understanding signed by the municipality of Rome,  the Sapienza University of Rome, the Lazio Regional Office of Health and Education, and the 19th Local Area Administration of the municipality of Rome. The project includes, in addition to creating a multipurpose “metropolitan and urban center,” social, cultural and health care services throughout the area, educational activities, a research facility for university students and the upgrading of the Museo Laboratorio della Mente. Santa Maria della Pietà Psychiatric Hospital, over the course of its 500-year history, was a landmark in the psychiatric field for scholars, researchers and those concerned with mental health in Italy and elsewhere.
Ever since it was established (Decision No. 690 on May 9, 1991, ex USL RM 12), the Center for Study and Research has taken on the job of following the path created by the closing of the Psychiatric Hospital. The Center’s objective is to preserve, after the 1999 closing of the hospital, the priceless record left as a legacy to the city of Rome: an architectural complex and archives, which have been scrupulously organized and are now easy to use; rare and valuable books; scientific instruments; everyday articles and artworks that uniquely document the history of psychiatric services.
The Center for Study and Research  Museo Laboratorio della Mente conducts training and research activities in the fields of mental health, promoting public health and advancing scientific knowledge. The Center supports initiatives for citizens in collaboration with the Ministry for Cultural Property and Activities, the Lazio Region, the Province of Rome, the municipality of Rome, Italian and international educational, university and research institutions.
The Center’s offices are located in Pavilion 26 on the grounds of the former Santa Maria della Pietà  Psychiatric Hospital. The building also houses the Alberto Cencelli Library, the Santa Maria della Pietà archives, an information room and a conference center with rooms for meetings and training activities.
